Shelter Island is District #1

This book represents an initial effort to change how the Port of San Diego goes about design/build – starting with Shelter Island. It’s also about staff working to connect with people. And, helping developers, of all 10 districts, think about the future together.

Problem
Change was needed.
1. Very little “design” to “Design Build”
2. Very little stakeholder involvement in development
3. Improve staff working together, with tenants, developers and the public
4. Create a process and system that would work for all 10 districts

Solution:
We chose to use the process of Human Centered Design to share different ways to collaborate and “design” with specific customers in mind. (9 Shelter Island personas) We then conducted offsite design-jams with the intent to show the team the value of stakeholder and design led solutions.

The First Wave Starts Here.

Change how we work and develop

It’s also about a destination potential. – The direct result of an experiment in design for public space and a pilot project devised around teamwork, collaboration, and trust in doing better for the people of San Diego.
